Find is a command found in a variety of operating systems’ command-line interpreters (shells). It’s used to find a specified text string in a file or a set of files. The provided lines are sent to the standard output device using this command.

The find command searches the input data stream for lines that contain or do not contain a given string and sends them to the output data stream. Wildcard characters are not supported.

DOS, Digital Research FlexOS, IBM/Toshiba 4690 OS, IBM OS/2, Microsoft Windows, and ReactOS all support the command. The command is available in MS-DOS versions 2 and higher. The locate command is implemented in DR DOS 6.0 and Datalight ROM-DOS. Jim Hall created the FreeDOS version, which is released under the GPL.

The Unix command locate, which is similar to Windows’ forfiles, has a completely different purpose. The Unix grep is an approximate approximation of Windows find.
