September marks the beginning of the ecclesiastical year in the Eastern Orthodox Church. This is the start of the school year in many countries of the northern hemisphere when children return to school after the summer break, sometimes on the first day of the month.
September (from the Latin septem, “seven”) was originally the seventh of ten months in the oldest known Roman calendar, the Romulus calendar c. 750 BC With March (Latin Martius) the first month of the year, possibly before 451 BC. Following a calendar reform that added January and February to the beginning of the year. September became the ninth month but retained its name. There were 29 days up to the Julian reform, adding another day.
In September, ancient Roman festivals include the Ludi Romani, which was originally celebrated from 12 to September 14 and then extended to 5 to September 19. In the 1st century BC, an additional day was added on September 4 in honor of the deified Julius Caesar. Apulum Jovis took place on September 13. Ludi Triumphales took place from September 18 to 22nd. Septimonium was celebrated in September and later on the calendar on December 11. These dates do not correspond to the modern Gregorian calendar. In 1752, the Gregorian calendar was adopted by the British Empire. In the British Empire, in the same year, September 2 was immediately followed by September 14.
In Charlemagne’s calendar, September was called the “harvest month.” September corresponds partly to Fructidor and partly to Vendémiaire of the first French republic. Usenet claims that September 1993 (Eternal September) never ended. September in Switzerland is called Herbstmonat, the month of the harvest. The Anglo-Saxons call the month Gerstmonath, the month of barley, and this harvest is usually harvested.
The September equinox takes place in this month, and certain festivals are organized around it. It is the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the vernal equinox in the southern hemisphere. Dates may vary from September 21-24 (UTC).
September mainly falls on the sixth month of the astrological calendar (and the first part of the seventh), which begins at the end of March/Mars/Aries.
