Smurfs is a Belgian comic franchise focused on a fictional colony of little blue, human-like animals living in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. Smurfs was first created and presented as a series of comic characters from the Belgian comics artist Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958, where they were known as Les Schtroumpfs.

Smurfs has more than 100 characters, and their names are based on adjectives that emphasize their features, such as “Jokey Smurf,” who loves to joke with his smurfs friends. “Smurfette” was the first Smurf female to be featured in the series. Smurfs wear Phrygian hats that represent freedom in the new modern age.

The word “smurf” is the original Dutch translation of the French “schtroumpf”, which, according to Peyo, is a word that he invented during his meal with his colleague André Franquin when he could not remember the word “salt.”

The Smurfs franchise begins with comics and is distributed in commercials, movies, TV shows, theme parks, video games, ice Capades and dolls.
