A cap is a form of headgear. Caps have crowns that fit very close to the head. They are usually designed for warmth and often include a visor to block sunlight from the eyes. They come in different shapes, sizes and different brands.
Hats or caps are worn for various reasons – from fashion to protection, to ceremonies and rituals, for women and men. They were a marking of the class to which a particular carrier belonged, and were used to distinguish nationalities, branches, and ranks in the army.
In the past, caps were an indicator of social status. In military, hats may indicate nationality, service, rank or regiment. Typically, police wear distinctive hats, such as brimmed hats or peaked caps, those worn by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Some hats have a protective function.
As examples, the hard hat protects construction workers heads of builders from falling objects, while a British police helmet protects the officer’s head, a hat from the sun protects the face and shoulders from the sun, a cowboy hat protects from the sun and rain, and a ushanka fur hat with fold-down earflaps keeps the head and ears warm.
Some hats are worn for ceremonial purposes, such as a mortarboard worn (or carried) during university graduation ceremonies. Some hats are worn by a particular profession, such as the Toque worn by chefs. Some hats have religious functions, such as the mitre worn by Bishops and the turban worn by Sikhs.
