Famous cartoonist Osamu Tezuka adapted a comic called New Treasure Island in 1947, and comics became popular in Japan, which helped ACG (Anime, comic, and game) to thrive in Japan and set its true foundations. Meanwhile, Disney cosplay entered Japan and had a significant influence. People who loved ACV imitated what they saw, and the act became more and more popular.

The first cosplay show appeared in 1955, and the so-called cosplay was just a game for children to dress up as characters from popular animations in Japan at that time. Several cartoons enjoyed great popularity with children, and roles were often played. Although cosplay is a children’s game, their cosplay clothes were quite delicate and required enough money. At that time, there was no clothing store that offered these clothes, specifically in Japan, so children had to get a proper design and make clothes in department stores. It is said that the famous game producer Hiroi Oji invited geishas who lived nearby to draw cosplay clothes for him when he was little. The situation lasted for twenty years until the early 80s. The period is significant for cosplay in Japan because the current ideas of cosplay were shaped at that time.

Although cosplay developed a lot in Japan and attracted more and more people, no formal cosplay performance appeared. Cosplay fans could only take pictures and post them with their own money. Like the popularity of cartoons and video games, more and more young people liked these photos, and they created many teams to play roles. Later, several activities were carried out, and many groups joined. They promoted their beautiful cosplay photos and went out of their way to attract new visitors. The phenomenon was quite astonishing. Cosplay started to gain great popularity.

It is said that cosplay was childish in the 1960s and 1970s. The 1980s can be considered the moment of their creation, and the 90s are a period when they began to mature. In the 1990s, the ACV field successfully organized several exhibitions on cartoons and comics and invited many young people to dress up as roles in cartoons and video games to attract more people to attend the exhibitions, which is quite similar to what Disney has done at the beginning. The conclusion can be drawn, that is to say, that the start-up and development of cosplay has a lot to do with the commercialization of ACV. In other words, cosplay is a way for ACV to promote itself, and cosplay can develop better with the help of ACV.
