Pants or trousers are clothing that might come from Central Asia and can be worn from the waist to the ankles, covering both legs separately (and not with fabric on both legs, as in clothes, skirts and dresses).
Outside of North America, the word pants usually means underwear, not trousers. Shorts are similar to pants, but with legs that come down only around the knee, higher or lower, depending on the style of clothing. To distinguish them from shorts, pants can be called “long pants” in certain contexts, for example, in school uniforms, where custom-made shorts can be called “short trousers”, especially in the UK.
The oldest known trousers were found at the Yanhai Cemetery in Turpan, Xinjiang, Western China and are dated to the 10th and 12th centuries BC. Made of wool, the trousers had, trousers have straight legs and wide crotches and are likely for riding.
