Google Drive is a Google-developed file storage and syncing service. Google Drive, which was launched on April 24, 2012, allows users to store files in the cloud (on Google’s servers), sync files across devices, and share files. Google Drive has applications for Windows and macOS desktops, as well as Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, in addition to a web interface. Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides are all part of the Google Docs Editors office suite, which allows you to work on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, forms, and more. Google Docs files are preserved on Google Drive after they’ve been created and updated.

Google One provides customers with 15 GB of free storage on Google Drive. Optional premium subscriptions are also available for 100 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 10 TB, 20 TB, and 30 TB of storage on Google One. Up to 5 terabytes of data can be uploaded. Individual files and folders can have their privacy settings changed, such as allowing sharing with other users or making material public. Users may use natural language to discover specific files, such as “find my budget spreadsheet from last December,” and search for images by describing their aesthetics.

A Backups feature on the website, and Android app shows which Android devices have data backed up to the service, and a fully revamped PC version introduced in July 2017 allows users to back up particular folders on their computer. A tool called Quick Access can automatically forecast which files users will require.

Google Workspace, Google’s monthly subscription product for businesses and organizations that ran as G Suite until October 2020, includes Google Drive as a significant component. The drive comes with unlimited storage, comprehensive file audit reports, increased administrative controls, and improved team communication features as part of some Google Workspace subscriptions.

The privacy policy of Google Drive was widely criticized by various members of the media upon the service’s Introduction. Google has a single set of Terms of Service and Privacy Policies that apply to all of its services, which means that the wording in the agreements gives Google extensive rights to reproduce, distribute, and make derivative works from anything saved on Google Drive. While the rules clearly state that users maintain their intellectual property rights, privacy activists are concerned that the licenses give Google the ability to utilize the information and data to tailor the advertising and other services it offers. Other members of the media, on the other hand, noted that the agreements were no worse than those of competing cloud storage services, but that the competition’s agreements use “more artful language,” and that Google requires the rights in order to “move files around on its servers, cache your data, or make image thumbnails.”

Google Drive had over one billion active users as of July 2018 and over one million organizational paying subscribers as of September 2015. There were approximately two trillion files saved on the site as of May 2017.
