Kingdom Hearts III is a Square Enix action role-playing game released in 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and subsequently Microsoft Windows. It is the twelfth game in the Kingdom Hearts series, and it concludes the “Dark Seeker Saga” story arc that started with the first game. Returning protagonist Sora is joined by Donald Duck, Goofy, King Mickey, and Riku in their hunt for seven guardians of light in order to stop Xehanort’s plan to bring about a second Keyblade War, set after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Their adventure takes them across realms based on Disney and Pixar intellectual properties, where they meet characters and visit places.

Kingdom Hearts III was first conceived in 2005, following the release of Kingdom Hearts II in Japan, but the game’s development was not revealed until 2013, after years of rumors and conjecture. The game includes minigames inspired by classic Walt Disney Productions Mickey Mouse cartoons in the style of 1980s LCD games, as well as expanding parties to five characters, introducing new “Attraction Flow” attacks that incorporate various Disney Parks attractions, and introducing new “Attraction Flow” attacks that incorporate various Disney Parks attractions.

Kingdom Hearts III was released in January 2019 in the United States and received mostly good reviews from reviewers. It became the fastest-selling and best-selling game in the series’ history after selling over five million copies in its first week of release. Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind, a digital content addition for the game, was published on January 23, 2020 for PlayStation 4 and February 25, 2020 for Xbox One. All subsequent games in the franchise, as well as a Microsoft Windows version, were published on March 30, 2021.

Kingdom Hearts III features hack and slash combat, which director Tetsuya Nomura stated would be similar to the system seen in Kingdom Hearts II, with an evolution similar to what was seen from Kingdom Hearts to Kingdom Hearts II, and closely tied to the gameplay in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. He also stated that he experimented with fighting techniques in the Kingdom Hearts series’ portable games, and that some of the well-received features might come in Kingdom Hearts III.

“When creating a Kingdom Hearts game, we start with a gameplay system that I think would be a fun element, and once we have an idea of what kind of gameplay or system we want in place, we flesh out the story around it, surrounding the basic concept of what kind of fun we’re going to have with this new installment,” Nomura said. Furthermore, the development team “always wants to attempt something fresh,” taking previously presented mechanics and tweaking them to make them unique to Kingdom Hearts III.
