Roger Federer (born August 8, 1981) is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. The Association of Tennis Professionals has him rated No. 8 in the world (ATP). He and Rafael Nadal share the all-time record of 20 Grand Slam men’s singles championships. Federer has spent 310 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings, including a record 237 consecutive weeks, and has five times completed the year as the top player. Federer has 103 ATP singles championships, second only to Jimmy Connors in all-time, including a record six ATP Finals.

Federer competed in an era when he dominated men’s tennis alongside Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, collectively known as the Big Three and largely regarded as three of the best tennis players of all time. Federer won his first Grand Slam singles championship at Wimbledon in 2003, at the age of 21.

He was a Wimbledon junior winner in 1998. He won three of the four major singles championships and the ATP Finals in 2004; then, he did it again in 2006 and 2007. Federer reached 18 of the 19 major singles finals between 2005 and 2010.

During this time, he won his sixth straight Wimbledon and US Open titles. After three previous runner-up finishes behind Rafael Nadal, his primary opponent until 2010, he completed his career Grand Slam at the 2009 French Open. At Wimbledon in 2009, he also broke Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slam men’s singles championships, which he held at the time.

Although Federer stayed in the top three for most of the decade, the success of Djokovic and Nadal, particularly on grass and hard courts, put an end to his supremacy. He only won one major title from mid-2010 until the end of 2016. During this time, Federer and Stan Wawrinka led Switzerland to their first Davis Cup championship in 2014, after their gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Federer also holds a silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics in singles, when he came in second to Andy Murray.

Federer had a comeback at the majors after having a half-year out in late 2016 to recover from knee surgery. Over the next two years, he won three more Grand Slam singles championships, including the 2017 Australian Open over Nadal and a men’s singles record-tying eighth Wimbledon trophy later that year. In 2018, at the age of 36, he became the oldest ATP world No. 1.

Federer is a talented all-court player whose apparent ease has made him a favorite among tennis fans. Federer improved his on-court manner from a lack of self-control as a youngster to become well-known for his general graciousness, receiving the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award 13 times. He’s also a five-time winner of the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award. Aside from participating, he was a key figure in the development of the Laver Cup team tournament.

Federer is a philanthropist as well. He founded the Roger Federer Foundation to help poor children in southern Africa, and the Match for Africa exhibition series has helped him generate cash. Federer is consistently in the top ten highest-paid sportsmen in any sport, and in 2020, he was rated first among all athletes with a $100 million endorsement revenue.
