SpongeBob SquarePants (commonly known as SpongeBob) is a Nickelodeon animated comedy television series developed by Stephen Hillenburg, a marine science professor, and animator. The series follows the titular character and his aquatic companions as they embark on adventures in the fictitious underwater metropolis of Bikini Bottom. It is the fifth-longest-running animated series in the United States, and its success has turned it into a media franchise. It is Nickelodeon’s highest-rated series, as well as ViacomCBS Networks International’s most widely distributed franchise. Nickelodeon has made more than $13 billion in merchandise income from the media brand.

Many of the series’ concepts came from Hillenburg’s unreleased instructional book The Intertidal Zone, which he wrote in 1989 to teach his students about underwater life. Following the cancellation of Rocko’s Modern Life in 1996, he began developing SpongeBob SquarePants into a television series, and in 1997, a seven-minute pilot was submitted to Nickelodeon. To voice the titular character, he went to Tom Kenny, who had previously worked with him on that series. SpongeBob was initially supposed to be called SpongeBoy, and the series was going to be called SpongeBoy Ahoy!, but both of these names were altered due to the name being trademarked.

After the 1999 Kids’ Choice Awards, Nickelodeon released a trailer for the series in the United States on May 1, 1999. On July 17, 1999, the series aired for the first time. Since its launch, it has earned widespread critical praise, and by the second season, it had amassed immense popularity.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, a feature film, was released in theaters on November 19, 2004. On February 6, 2015, a second film version, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, was released. On August 14, 2020, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run was released in Canadian cinemas, followed by a March 4, 2021 launch on video-on-demand and Paramount+. The series began broadcasting its twelfth season in 2018, and on July 17, 2019, it was renewed for a thirteenth season, which will premiere in October 2020. All previous seasons of the program will be accessible on Paramount+ starting July 30, 2020.

Six Annie Awards, eight Golden Reel Awards, four Emmy Awards, 18 Kids’ Choice Awards, and two BAFTA Children’s Awards have all been given to SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2017, a Broadway musical based on the show premiered to great acclaim. A computer-animated spin-off series, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, premiered on the streaming service Paramount+ in March 2021.

As of 2020, two more spin-off shows are in the works: an unnamed project based on the character Squidward Tentacles and The Patrick Star Show.

The series is set largely in Bikini Bottom, a fictitious benthic underwater metropolis in the Pacific Ocean under the real-life coral reef of Bikini Atoll. Its inhabitants are primarily colorful fish that dwell in houses built from ship funnels and travel in “boatmobiles,” which are hybrids of vehicles and boats.
