Adventure Time is a Cartoon Network fantasy animated television series created by Pendleton Ward. The series follows the adventures of a boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (John DiMaggio), a dog with the magical ability to change size and shape at will. It is produced by Pendleton Ward, Adam Muto, and Fred Seibert for Frederator Studios and Cartoon Network Studios. Finn and Jake dwell in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo alongside Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch), the Ice King (Tom Kenny), Marceline (Olivia Olson), BMO (Niki Yang), and other characters.

The show is based on a 2007 short that aired on Nicktoons as part of Seibert’s animation incubator series Random! Cartoons at Nickelodeon Animation. Nickelodeon executives passed on their option when the short became a viral sensation on the Internet. Still, Cartoon Network commissioned a full-length series from Seibert and Ward, which premiered on March 11, 2010. On April 5, 2010, the show debuted on Cartoon Network and ended on September 3, 2018.

The series was inspired by several elements, including video games and the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. It was created utilizing hand-drawn animation, with storyboarding artists deciding on the action and language for each episode based on preliminary sketches. Multiple episodes were worked on simultaneously since each episode took about eight to nine months to finish.

The cast recorded their lines in groups, and the show frequently used guest actors to play minor and recurrent roles. Each episode lasts around eleven minutes, and pairs of episodes are frequently shown to cover half-hour program gaps. On September 29, 2016, Cartoon Network confirmed that the series would end in 2018 when the tenth season aired. The series finale aired on September 3, 2018, followed by the Distant Lands specials and the Fionna and Cake spin-off, all of which were available on HBO Max.

Adventure Time was a ratings hit for Cartoon Network, with some episodes garnering over three million viewers. While being intended largely at children, the program has grown in popularity among teens and adults. Adventure Time has earned eight Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, three Annie Awards, two British Academy Children’s Awards, a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award, and a Kerrang! Award, among other accolades.

Three Critics’ Choice Television Awards, two Annecy Festival Awards, a TCA Award, and a Sundance Film Festival Award have all been nominated for the series. One Eisner Award and two Harvey Awards were given to one of the numerous comic book spin-offs based on the series. In addition to books, video games, and apparel, the series has produced a variety of branded products.
