A cake is a sweet food made from flour, sugar and other ingredients that is commonly baked. In their ancient forms, cakes were modifications of bread, but cakes now encompass a wide variety of preparations that can be simple or complex, and share similarities with other desserts such as pastries, meringues, custards, and pies.

The most commonly used cake ingredients include flour, sugar, eggs, oil or butter or margarine, liquids, and solvents such as baking soda or baking powder. Common accessory ingredients and flavors include dried, candied, or fresh fruits, nuts, cocoa, and extracts such as vanilla, with numerous base for primary ingredient substitutions. Cakes can also be filled with canned fruits, nuts, or dessert sauces (such as pastry cream), covered with butter cream or other icing, and garnished with marzipan, piped borders, or candied fruits.

The cake is often served as a festive meal at celebrations such as weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. There are countless cake recipes; some are like bread, some are rich and sophisticated, and many are centuries old. Cake making is no longer a complicated procedure; While there was once a lot of effort in making cakes (especially the whisking of egg foams)), the equipment and baking instructions were simplified so that even the most avid chefs could bake a cake.

The term “cake” has a long history. The word itself comes from the Vikings origin, from the old Norse word “kaka”.

The ancient Greeks called the cake πλακοῦς (plakous), which comes from word πλακόεις (plakoeis) meaning “flat.” It was baked from flour mixed with eggs, milk, nuts and honey. They also had a cake called satura, which was a heavy cake. During the Roman period, the name of the cake became “placenta”, which comes from the Greek word. The placenta was baked on a pastry base or inside a pastry box.

The Greeks invented beer in the form of a leavener, frying fritters in olive oil and cheesecake in goat’s milk. In ancient Rome, butter, eggs and honey were sometimes added to the main bread dough, resulting in a sweet and cake-like baked good. The Latin poet Ovid mentions his brother’s birthday and cake in his first book of exile, Tristia.

Early cakes in England were also essentially bread: the most obvious differences between “cake” and “bread” were the round, flat shape of the cakes and the method of preparation in which the cakes were turned once during preparation, while the bread remained upright during preparation.
