Britney Jean Spears is a singer, songwriter, and dancer from the United States. She is known as the “Princess of Music” because she is credited with encouraging the resurrection of adolescent pop in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Spears signed with Jive Records in 1997 at the age of 15 after participating in theater shows and television series. …Baby One More Time (1999) and Oops!… I Did It Again (2000), both certified diamond in the United States, were global triumphs and became two of the best-selling albums of all time, as well as making her the best-selling adolescent artist of all time. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked the former’s title track the best debut single of all time, and the latter set a 15-year record for the fastest-selling album by a female artist in the United States, with first-week sales of over 1.3 million copies. Spears’ following two studio albums, Britney (2001) and With the Zone (2003), had more adult and sexual themes and aesthetics, and she made her feature film debut in the film Crossroads (2002).

Her fifth studio album, Blackout (2007), was executive produced by her, and it is widely regarded as her greatest work. The album’s promotion was limited due to a series of widely publicized personal issues, and she was eventually placed under a conservatorship. Since then, she has recorded two chart-topping albums, Circus (2008) and Femme Fatale (2011), with the latter becoming her most successful era of singles in the US charts. Britney: Piece of Me, a four-year residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, was launched to promote her next two albums, Britney Jean (2013) and Glory (2014). (2016). Spears’ court struggle over her conservatorship was brought to light in 2019, sparking the #FreeBritney campaign. Her public statement in 2021 showed that she had accused her management team and family of abuse and voiced a wish to end the relationship.

Spears has six albums that have debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. “…Baby One More Time,” “Womanizer,” “3,” and “Hold It Against Me” are her four solo number-one songs on the US Billboard Hot 100. The “S&M” remix also topped the Billboard chart as a featured artist. “Oops!… I Did It Again,” “Toxic,” and “Scream & Shout” were among the other singles that topped the charts in most nations. She became the second artist after Mariah Carey in the history of the Hot 100 to debut at number one with two or more singles with “3” in 2009 and “Hold It Against Me” in 2011. Spears’ elaborately choreographed videography has been recognized as a key factor in her career’s successearning her the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. She has received a Grammy Award, fifteen Guinness World Records, six MTV Video Music Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, including the Millennium Award, the inaugural Radio Disney Icon Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, among many others.

Spears is regarded as a pop legend, having sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, including more than 70 million in the United States alone, making her one of the best-selling music artists in the world. Billboard named her the eighth-biggest artist of the 2000s decade. She is the fourth best-selling female album artist of the Nielsen SoundScan period and the best-selling female album artist of the 2000s in the United States.
