Role in The Phantom Menace

Darth Maul made his cinematic debut in The Phantom Menace and quickly became a fan favorite. He was the primary antagonist of the film, and his fearsome appearance and intense fighting style made him an instant hit with audiences.

Throughout the movie, Maul seeks to eliminate the heroes of the story and complete his mission to secure the Naboo blockade for the Trade Federation. He confronts Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi several times, leading to an epic lightsaber duel that ends with the apparent death of Qui-Gon.

Maul’s demise seemed set when Obi-Wan disarmed him, cutting his lightsaber in half. However, to the surprise of the audience, Maul used his acrobatic skills to continue his attack with the remaining blade. Obi-Wan ultimately defeats Maul by using his master’s discarded lightsaber, cutting him in half and sending him tumbling down a pit.

Despite his apparent death in The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul made subsequent appearances in other Star Wars media, leading to an expanded backstory for the character.

In the animated series The Clone Wars, Maul was revealed to have survived his fall and lived in secrecy on the planet Lotho Minor, driven insane by his hatred of Obi-Wan. He eventually regains his sanity and forms a criminal syndicate called the Shadow Collective, with the goal of taking revenge against both the Jedi and Darth Sidious.

Darth Maul also makes appearances in Star Wars Rebels, set before the original trilogy. In these appearances, Maul is a hermit living on the planet Malachor, where he seeks to uncover the secrets of the Sith temple located there. He also plays a significant role in the final season of The Clone Wars, where he attempts to exact his revenge against Darth Sidious once and for all.
