Fergal Devit is an Irish professional wrestler presently contracted to WWE, where he competes under the ring name Finn Bálor on the SmackDown brand. Bálor was the first Universal Champion of the WWE. He has also won two NXT Championships and two WWE Intercontinental Championships.

Devitt is most remembered for his stint as Prince Devitt in New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he was a three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and a six-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, winning the championship twice with Minoru and four times with Ryusuke Taguchi. He’s also a two-time champion of the Best of the Super Juniors competition, having won in 2010 and 2013. He’s also a founding member of the Bullet Club stable and its initial leader.

Devitt also competed in Mexico, where he was a one-time NWA World Historic Middleweight Champion, courtesy to NJPW’s relationship with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). He has competed in several independent promotions, winning the ICW Zero-G Championship, the RPW British Cruiserweight Championship, and the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship twice.

Bálor won the NXT Championship after joining with WWE’s developmental system, NXT, and adopting his current ring name, and he held the record for the longest reigning champion at 292 days until Adam Cole broke it on March 19, 2020. Bálor was also the first co-winner of the first Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic alongside Samoa Joe during his stint in NXT.

Bálor made history by becoming the first wrestler in WWE history to win a world title on their pay-per-view debut, the second ever Irish world champion in WWE (after Sheamus), and the quickest wrestler in WWE history to win a world title by becoming the inaugural WWE Universal Champion at SummerSlam 2016 just 27 days after his main roster debut.

Bálor was a two-time Intercontinental Champion during his tenure on the main roster. In 2019, Bálor returned to NXT, and in 2020, he regained the NXT Championship for the third time, becoming the third two-time champion in the company’s history (after Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura). During Bálor’s tenure, the NXT Championship was formally acknowledged by WWE as a world championship in 2021, making him a three-time WWE world champion.

Devitt debuted for NWA UK Hammerlock in 2000 at the age of 18, shortly after capturing the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship. His wrestling career has taken off quickly after graduation, and he began touring Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Devitt and Paul Tracey founded NWA Ireland, a wrestling company located in Ireland, in mid-2002. As both marketed under the NWA name, the promotion quickly became the sibling group of NWA UK Hammerlock. Devitt trained future WWE combatant Becky Lynch as part of NWA Ireland.

Devitt defeated Dru Onyx for his second British Commonwealth championship on October 8, 2005, at the NWA 57th Anniversary Show in Nashville, Tennessee. Following the battle, both competitors were asked to train at the New Japan Inoki Dojo in Santa Monica, California. Devitt also began wrestling for the Millennium Wrestling Federation in the United States in late 2005. (MWF). On November 5, he made his MWF Television Championship debut in a triple threat match against champion Eddie Edwards and John Walters at Soul Survivor III.

In a match versus Osiris on the November edition of MWF Ultra, he made his televised debut. He was invited to study in New Japan’s main dojo in Tokyo after impressing several promoters and coaches, and he began training in the Japanese style of professional wrestling in early 2006. In March 2006, he was defeated by Karl Anderson in the British Commonwealth Championship.

Devitt competed in the National Wrestling Alliance’s (NWA) “Reclaiming the Glory” tournament in June 2007, which aimed to crown a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) had been in charge of the championship for numerous years, but NWA ended its contract with TNA in 2007. Devitt defeated Australian wrestler Mikey Nicholls in the first round, but fell to Bryan Danielson in the second round.
