A hospital is a healthcare facility that provides specialized medical and nursing services and medical equipment to patients. The most well-known form of the hospital is the general hospital, which usually contains an emergency room to handle urgent health issues such as fire and accident victims and acute illness. A district hospital is typically the region’s primary healthcare institution, with many intensive-care beds and additional beds for patients who require long-term care. Trauma centers, rehabilitation hospitals, children’s hospitals, seniors’ (geriatric) hospitals, and hospitals for specific medical requirements such as mental care and certain disease categories are examples of specialized hospitals. When compared to ordinary hospitals, specialized hospitals can help save money on health treatment. Depending on the sources of revenue, hospitals are classed as general, specialty, or government.

A teaching hospital integrates patient care with medical students and nurse education. A clinic is a medical institution that is smaller than a hospital. A hospital’s departments (such as surgery and urgent care) and specialty units (such as cardiology) are diverse. Outpatient departments and chronic treatment units are available at several hospitals. A pharmacy, pathology, and radiology are examples of standard support units.

Public financing, for-profit or nonprofit health organizations, health insurance companies, or charities, including direct charity gifts, are the most common funding sources for hospitals. Hospitals were frequently built and sponsored by religious groups or philanthropic people and leaders in the past.

Currently, hospitals are staffed mainly by professional doctors, surgeons, nurses, and allied health practitioners, whereas in the past, this work was done primarily to founding religious groups or volunteers. In the late 1990s, however, many Catholic religious orders, such as the Alexian’s and the Bon Secours Sisters, continued to focus on hospital ministry, as did several other Christian faiths, such as the Methodists and Lutherans. Hospitals were original “places of hospitality,” according to the actual definition of the word. This connotation is still retained in the titles of several institutions, such as the Royal Hospital Chelsea, founded in 1681 as a retirement and nursing home for veteran soldiers.

Some patients visit a hospital just for diagnosis, treatment, or therapy and then depart (“outpatients”); others are “admitted” and stay overnight or for several days, weeks, or months (“inpatients”). Hospitals are distinguished from other types of medical facilities by their ability to admit and care for inpatients, whereas clinics are smaller medical facilities.
