Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. The overwatch, described as a “shooter of heroes,” distributes players into two teams of six people, each of which selects from a list of more than 30 characters known as “heroes,” each of whom has a unique style of play, which is divided into three main roles, which match their purpose. Players in a team work together to secure and protect control points on the map or to accompany the payload on the map for a limited time. Players receive cosmetic rewards that do not affect the gameplay, such as character skins and victory poses when they play the game. Initially, the game was launched only with a casual play, but after the release, a competitive rank mode, various arcade game modes and a server browser customizable by the player were added. In addition, Blizzard added new characters, maps and game modes after the release, all for free, with additional costs for players being optional additional loot boxes to earn cosmetic items. It was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows in May 2016, and the Nintendo Switch in October 2019.

Overwatch is the fourth major Blizzard franchise to appear after the cancellation of ambitious massive online multiplayer role-playing game in 2014. Part of the Titan team developed the Overwatch concept, based on the success of first-person team shooters like Team Fortress 2 and the popularity of multiplayer online battle arena games, creating a hero-based shooter that emphasized teamwork. Some Overwatch elements borrow assets and concepts from the canceled Titan project. After creating a story about the optimistic environment of the Earth in the near future after the global crisis, the developers sought to create a variety of heroes that would cover gender and ethnicity as part of this situation. Significant time is spent on adjusting the balance of characters so that new players can still have fun, while experienced players challenge each other.

Overwatch was presented at the 2014 BlizzCon event and was in a closed beta from late 2015 to early 2016. The pre-release open beta brought together nearly 10 million players. The release of the game was facilitated by short animated videos to familiarize themselves with the narrative and characters. Overwatch has received widespread acclaim by critics who praised the game for its accessibility, the diverse appeal of the characters, its colorful cartoon art style, and its enjoyable gameplay. Blizzard reported revenue of more than $1 billion in its first year of release and totaled more than 50 million players in three years.
