Green Lantern is the name of various superheroes that feature in DC Comics’ American comic books. They battle evil with the use of rings that bestow a variety of amazing abilities, many of which stem from their imaginations and/or emotions. Members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic law enforcement agency, are frequently represented as the characters.

Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, was created in 1940 by Martin Nodell during the Golden Age of Comic Books and used his magic ring to fight ordinary criminals in Capitol City (and subsequently, Gotham City).

In 1959, John Broome and Gil Kane reimagined the character as Hal Jordan for the Silver Age of Comic Books, shifting the focus of Green Lantern stories from fantasy to science fiction. Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz are some of the other prominent Green Lanterns.

The Green Lantern Corps is one of DC Comics’ most enduring groups of characters. They’ve been made into television shows, video games, and movies.

Alan Scott, the true identity of this Green Lantern, was a railroad engineer who, following a train wreck, came into possession of a magical lantern that talked to him and promised power. He used this to create a magical ring that granted him a wide range of abilities. The ring’s restrictions were that it had to be “charged” every 24 hours by touching it to the light for a short period of time, and it couldn’t directly influence wood items.

Alan Scott battled primarily regular human adversaries, but he did encounter a few supernatural foes, like the immortal Vandal Savage and the undead Solomon Grundy. The majority of the stories took place in New York.

The Green Lantern was a popular character in the 1940s, appearing in anthology publications like All-American Comics and Comic Cavalcade and his own book, Green Lantern. He also featured in All Star Comics as a member of the Justice Society of America, a superhero squad.

The popularity of superheroes in general dropped after WWII. With issue #38 (May–June 1949), the Green Lantern comic book was cancelled, and the character’s final Golden Age appearance was in All Star Comics #57 (1951).

When superheroes resurfaced in the 1980s, the character Alan Scott was resurrected, but he was eternally overshadowed by the new Hal Jordan persona created to take his place. Initially, he appeared in the books of other superheroes as a guest star, but he soon landed regular parts in the Justice Society’s publications.

He was never given another solo show. Alan Scott’s superhero codename was changed to “Sentinel” between 1995 and 2003 by DC Comics to separate him from the newer and more popular science fictional Green Lanterns.

Alan Scott’s persona was reimagined in 2011. His outfit was altered, and the source of his abilities was changed to mystical natural power.
