Make in India is a government of India effort to encourage firms to manufacture in India and to encourage focused manufacturing investments. The policy strategy was to establish an investment-friendly climate, build modern, efficient infrastructure, and open up new industries to foreign investors. The project sought to “turn India into a global design and manufacturing center” by focusing on 25 economic areas for job creation and skill development.

Between September 2014 and February 2016, India received investment pledges totaling 16.40 lakh crore (US$230 billion) and investment enquiries worth 1.5 lakh crore (US$21 billion) following the launch. As a consequence, India surpassed the United States and China as the top foreign direct investment (FDI) destination in 2015, with US$60.1 billion in FDI.

According to guidelines issued, all 100 sectors are open to 100 percent foreign direct investment (FDI), with the exception of the space industry (74 percent), defense industry (49 percent), and Indian media (26 percent ). To encourage investment, Japan and India established a US$12 billion “Japan-India Make-in-India Special Finance Facility.”

Individual states have also established their own local efforts in accordance with Make in India, such as ‘Make in Odisha,’ ‘Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet,’ ‘Vibrant Gujarat,’ ‘Happening Haryana,’ and ‘Magnetic Maharashtra.’ In the fiscal year 2016″17, India received $60 billion in foreign direct investment.
