The most populous city in the United States is New York City (NYC), often known as New York. New York Metropolis is also the most densely populated large city in the United States, with an estimated population of 8,336,817 people spread out over 302.6 square miles (784 km2). The city is the heart of the New York metropolitan region, the world’s biggest metropolitan area by urban area, and is located near the southern point of New York.

It is one of the world’s most populated megacities, with about 20 million inhabitants in its metropolitan statistical area and approximately 23 million in its combined statistical region.

New York City has been dubbed the world’s cultural, financial, and media center, with a considerable impact on business, entertainment, research, technologyeducation, politics, tourism, artfashion, and sports. It is also the world’s most photographed city. New York, home to the United Nations’ headquarters, is an important center for international diplomacy and has been dubbed “the world’s capital” on occasion.

New York City is made up of five boroughs, each of which is a county of the state of New York and is located on one of the world’s biggest natural ports. When municipal governments were united into a single city in 1898, the five boroughs—Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island—were formed. The city and its surrounding metropolitan region serve as the primary entry point for legal immigrants to the United States.

New York is home to over 800 languages, making it the world’s most linguistically diverse metropolis. As of 2016, New York has the biggest foreign-born population of any city globally, with over 3.2 million inhabitants born outside the United States.


The New York metropolitan region will create $2.0 trillion in the gross metropolitan product (GMP) in 2019. The New York metropolitan region would have the world’s eighth-largest GDP if it were a sovereign state. New York has the greatest concentration of billionaires of any city on the planet.

New York City dates back to 1624 when Dutch colonists established a trade station on the southern point of Manhattan Island. New Amsterdam (Dutch: Nieuw Amsterdam) was founded in 1626 and incorporated as a city in 1653. After King Charles II of England handed the territories to his brother, the Duke of York, the city fell under English rule in 1664 and was called New York.

In July 1673, the Dutch recaptured the city and renamed New Orange for a year and three months; the city has been known as New York since November 1674. From 1785 until 1790, New York Metropolis served as the United States’ capital, and since 1790, it has been the country’s biggest city.

The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the United States and its values of liberty and peace, greeted millions of immigrants arriving by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. New York has developed as a global hub of innovation, business, and environmental sustainability in the twenty-first century and a symbol of freedom and cultural variety. In a poll of over 30,000 individuals from 48 locations worldwide, New York was chosen as the most fantastic city in the world in 2019, citing its cultural variety.
