A stormtrooper is a fictional soldier from George Lucas’ Star Wars universe. The stormtroopers, first shown in Star Wars (1977), are the Galactic Empire’s elite shock troops/space marines, led by Emperor Palpatine and his officers, most notably Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin, throughout the original film trilogy (1977″1983). The Galactic Republic’s clone troopers, clones of bounty hunter Jango Fett, were deployed by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to “win” the Clone Wars and eventually to take over the government and destroy the Jedi, according to the prequel trilogy (1999″2005).

Despite this, subsequent stormtroopers are established as recruits; by the time of the original trilogy, only a few stormtroopers are clones, with the 501st Legion, called “Vader’s Fist,” being the only known legion to still retain a large number of clones. The enhanced stormtroopers serve the First Order under the guidance of Supreme Leader Snoke and his commanders, most notably Kylo Ren, General Hux, and Captain Phasma, in the sequel trilogy (2015″2019). The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the last installment of the trilogy, adds Sith Troopers, a red-armored variation of the First Order stormtroopers that serve the Sith Eternal, commanded by a revived Emperor Palpatine.

In the Star Wars universe, the Stormtrooper Corps’ battle order is unknown. Stormtroopers, who accompany the Imperial Navy, may be deployed quickly to respond to civil disturbance or insurgency, serve as a planetary garrison, and police territories within the Galactic Empire. They are seen in a variety of organizational sizes, ranging from squads to legions, and their armor and training have been changed for unique operations and settings in some cases.

There have been a few exceptions to this rule, such as Michael Leader (Episode IV), Laurie Goode (Episode IV), Peter Diamond (Episode IV-VI), Stephen Bayley (Episode IV), and Bill Weston (Episode IV).

The clone troopers, which serve as the basis of what would become the Empire’s stormtrooper force, were computer-generated pictures and spoken by Temuera Morrison, who portrayed bounty hunter Jango Fett, the clone army’s template, in Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). Daniel Logan, who previously portrayed Jango’s clone son Boba Fett, played the kid clone soldiers, while Bodie Taylor, who was cast for his likeness to a younger Morrison, played the clone troopers as young men. Morrison also appeared in Revenge of the Sith as Commander Cody, the only identified clone warrior that appears unmasked in the prequel trilogy.

John Boyega plays Finn, a former Stormtrooper FN-2187 who defected from the First Order and joined the Resistance, while Gwendoline Christie plays Captain Phasma, the First Order’s stormtrooper commander, in The Force Awakens (2015). Director J. J. Abrams also cast Alias and Lost composer Michael Giacchino as FN-3181 and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich as FN-9330, while Daniel Craig has a brief uncredited cameo as a stormtrooper whom Rey induces to let her escape from jail using the Jedi mind trick. In Greg Rucka’s anthology book Star Wars: Before the Awakening (2015), a riot control stormtrooper who brands Finn a traitor during the fight on Takodana is named as FN-2199 “Nines,” played by stunt performer Liang Yang and spoken by sound editor David Acord. The soldier, who wielded a “Z6 baton” and was christened “TR-8R” by fans, spawned a slew of jokes and fan art. In the Takodana segment, actor/director Kevin Smith also voiced a stormtrooper.

Stormtroopers were voiced by David Acord, Dee Bradley Baker, Steven Blum, Clancy Brown, Robin Atkin Downes, Greg Ellis, Dave Fennoy, Dave Filoni, Tom Kane, Andrew Kishino, Phil LaMarr, Liam O’Brien, Freddie Prinze, Jr., André Sogliuzzo, Stephen Stanton, Greg Weisman, Gary Anthony Williams, and Matthew Wood in Star Wars Rebels.

Jesse Averna, Kevin Deters, Jeremy Milton, and Rich Moore voice the stormtroopers on the “Oh My Disney” website in Ralph Breaks the Internet.

In “Chapter 8: Redemption,” the 2019 first-season finale episode of The Mandalorian, Jason Sudeikis and Adam Pally portray scout soldiers.
