Christopher Whitelaw Pine is an American actor who was born on August 26, 1980. In The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Pine makes his feature film debut as Lord Devereaux (2004). He is best known for his roles as James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot film series (2009–2016), Will Colson in Unstoppable (2010), Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods (2014), Jack Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), Toby Howard in Hell or High Water (2016), Bernie Webber in The Finest Hours (2016), Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), Dr. Alexander Murry in A Sense of Wonder (2017), and Steve Trevor in Wonder (2018).

Personal Life

Pine was born in Los Angeles, California, at Cedars Sinai Hospital. His father, Robert Pine, is an actor who played Sergeant Joseph Getraer on CHiPs, and his mother, Gwynne Gilford, is a psychologist who used to be an actress. Katherine, his older sister, is also an actress. Anne Gwynne, his maternal grandmother, was a Hollywood actress. Max M. Gilford, his maternal grandpa, was a lawyer who was elected president of the Hollywood Bar Association. He hailed from a Russian Jewish family. Greg Max Gilford, his uncle, is a former Dunhill Records recording artist who went on to work as a computer consultant before joining United Healthcare as a Recovery Mentor/Support Specialist.

Pine earned a B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 2002. Pine struggled to make friends when he first arrived at Berkeley because he was afraid of not fitting in. He went into theater because he didn’t want to join a fraternity. Pine appeared in a Caryl Churchill play at La Val’s Subterranean Theater and Orestes and Shakespeare at Zellerbach Hall as a member of the UC Berkeley Theater Department.

He spent a year as an exchange student at the University of Leeds in England. He attended the Williamstown Theatre Festival after graduating from Berkeley and studied at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Upcoming Projects

Pine was in talks to appear alongside Michelle Williams in a film version of the novel All the Old Knives in May 2017. The film was put on hold for a few years before being picked up by Amazon in 2020, starring Pine and Thandiwe Newton and directed by Janus Metz. Pine also serves as the film’s executive producer.

Pine will appear in and executive produce the action thriller Violence of Action, which will be released in May 2019. Pine was cast as Walter Cronkite in Newsflash, a drama film about how the media covered the assassination of John F. Kennedy, in August 2019. Pine is set to feature in Olivia Wilde’s second directorial picture, Don’t Worry Darling, in April 2020. Pine was in discussions to play the lead in a new Dungeons & Dragons film as of December 14, 2020.
