The original photo of the Shiba Inu dog that became the face of Doge is from a 2010 blog post by Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato. She posted a collection of photos of her dog, Kabosu, and one of them showed the dog looking sideways with raised eyebrows and a sideways mouth. The photo was uploaded to Tumblr in 2013, where it gained popularity and started being used as a meme with comic sans captions, creating a unique language, known as “Doge language,” that has a cute and playful vibe to it.

In 2013, Jackson Palmer, an Adobe Systems marketer, created Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by the Doge meme. Initially, it was meant to be a joke, a “fun” cryptocurrency, with no serious aspirations. However, it started gaining traction, especially after the Dogecoin community raised $50,000 to sponsor the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The price of Dogecoin has also skyrocketed, reaching record highs of $0.69 in May 2021, reflecting a surge of 14,000% in the first five months of the year, from $0.004 to $0.69. In the past, Dogecoin’s price has been unpredictable, with spikes and dips that sometimes mirror Bitcoin’s price movements.

With the increasing popularity of Dogecoin, many are wondering what the future holds. Some view Dogecoin as a meme cryptocurrency, with no serious use cases, while others believe that it has the potential to become a legitimate currency and store of value.
