Sergio Ramos Garca (born 30 March 1986) is a Spanish professional footballer who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. He is widely recognized as one of the best defenders of all time, having previously played for Real Madrid for sixteen seasons, winning four UEFA Champions League titles, two UEFA European Championships, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain.

Ramos joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2005 after graduating from Sevilla’s development system and spending two seasons with the senior team. Since then, he has been a fixture for Real Madrid, winning 22 major titles, including five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles, and has become one of the league’s best goal scorers from a defensive position.

He was named to the competition’s Team of the Season each time he played a key role in the build-up to all four UEFA Champions League victories. In the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final, he also equalized in the 93rd minute.

Ramos has been named to the FIFPro World11 eleven times, a defender record and the third-most all-time. He has also been included to the UEFA Team of the Year nine times, a defender record and the third most of any player. Ramos has also been awarded La Liga’s Best Defense a record five times, as well as to the La Liga Team of the Season in 2015-16. He joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2021.

Ramos represented Spain in four World Cups and three European Championships. He won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Championships, and he was chosen to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2010, as well as the UEFA Euro Team of the Tournament in 2012.

He made his debut for Spain at the age of 18 and became the country’s youngest player to reach 100 caps in 2013. Ramos now holds the record for the most appearances in Spanish national team history and is the country’s ninth-highest all-time goalscorer. He also holds the record for most international wins for Spain, with 131 victories. Ramos announced his retirement from international football in February 2023.

Style of play

Ramos is a physically strong player who excels in the air due to his elevation, eye for goal, and heading accuracy, giving him a goal threat on set-pieces; he is also a skilled and tough tackler. He is gifted with pace and is comfortable on the ball, boasting high technical ability as well as good distribution, passing, and crossing ability, which allows him to carry the ball forward, switch the play with long balls, or play out from the back on the ground.

According to the Spanish sports publication Marca, FIFA’s official statistics showed that Ramos was clocked at 30.6 kilometers per hour in 2015, making him one of the world’s quickest footballers at the time. He’s also a good penalty taker, and he’s noted for using the Panenka technique a lot. He has also been known to take free kicks, owing to his ability to bend the ball and his tremendous striking ability from long range.

Ramos has received praise for his leadership, athleticism, technical prowess, and ability to excel both offensively and defensively, as well as his versatility, which allows him to be deployed as a centre-back and as a full-back; in his youth, he frequently played as a right-back, but as his career progressed, he established himself as a centre-back.

His former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti compared him to great defender Paolo Maldini because of his vast range of skills; he went on to praise him as “the best defender in the world at the time” in 2014, a position repeated by Giorgio Chiellini in 2020.

Ramos has also been used as a center or defensive midfielder on occasion, most notably under Ancelotti during the 2014-15 season. Ramos has been praised for his decisive performances in vital games, most notably for Real Madrid, due to his penchant to score crucial goals for his club, and is regarded as one of the most reliable performers in high-pressure circumstances by various analysts.

Despite his ability as a defender, analysts and other football experts have questioned his tactical knowledge, consistency, and concentration from match to match, accusing him of being too impetuous in his challenges or prone to sporadic defensive errors over the course of a season.

Ramos is also frequently chastised in the media for his use of excessive, reckless aggression while playing, as well as his lack of discipline and proclivity to pick up an excessive amount of unwarranted cards; he has also been accused of diving.

Amazon Prime documentary

In January 2019, Amazon Prime and Ramos himself announced the release of El Corazón de Sergio Ramos, an eight-episode documentary series on Ramos’ life on and off the field (The Heart of Sergio Ramos). This would be the first time the world saw Ramos and his family’s intimate side. Ramos was suspended on March 5 for Real Madrid’s Champions League Round of 16 second leg encounter, and he watched the game from his VIP area in the stands.

The Amazon Prime team filmed his reactions. This sparked controversy as Real Madrid lost the match and were eliminated from the Champions League, though Ramos suggested on his social media networks that there were “certain commitments made and it never remotely went through my head that the game could have turned out as it did”.

Due to the popularity of his first Amazon docu-series, Ramos revealed on his social media accounts in June 2020 that Amazon Prime will be releasing another documentary titled La Leyenda Sergio Ramos (The Legend of Sergio Ramos), which will feature his career’s most memorable moments. It was released in Spain in April 2021 and will be distributed globally in June, with six episodes.
