The National Football League (NFL) winner for the 2022 season was decided at Super Bowl LVII, an American football game. The champions of the American Football Conference (AFC) beat the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC), 38–35. The game took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12, 2023. It was the fourth Super Bowl in the Phoenix area, and the third at this stadium. The last one was Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, which was held at what was then called University of Phoenix Stadium.

Both teams had the best record in their league, 14–3, at the end of the regular season. The Eagles have been to the Super Bowl four times, and this was their second time in the last six years. They won Super Bowl LII in 2017; in Super Bowls XV and XXXV, they lost. The Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl five times in total, and three times in the last four years. They have won Super Bowls IV and LIV and lost Super Bowls I and LV.

After the Eagles went into halftime with a 24–14 lead, the Chiefs came back to win the game 38–35. Harrison Butker hit the game-winning field goal. With 73 total points, this was the third-highest scoring Super Bowl game, and the Eagles’ 35 points were the most ever scored by the losing team. Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Super Bowl went to Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs. He completed 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three scores. Jalen Hurts set the record for most points scored by a player in a Super Bowl with 20. He did this by scoring three touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

The game on Fox was watched by an average of 115.1 million people, making it the most-watched show in the history of American TV. At its peak, 118.7 million people were watching the halftime show, which was led by Rihanna.

Starting with Super Bowl LVI, there was a new way to choose which places would host the Super Bowl. Instead of the old system, in which cities could bid for the right to host a game, the league now picks the site for each game on its own. The picked city then makes a plan, which is put to a vote at a meeting of the league’s owners. Arizona was the first place to be chosen in this process. On May 23, 2018, everyone agreed to accept Arizona’s plan.

It shows a sunset that looks like Arizona’s state flag behind a desert canyon to represent the area where the game will be held.
