In 1978, Devito landed his breakthrough role as Louie De Palma on the hit television series Taxi. The show, which followed the lives of taxi drivers working for the fictional Sunshine Cab Company, was a critical and commercial success, running for five seasons and winning numerous awards.

Devito’s performance as Louie De Palma, the surly dispatcher who oversaw the drivers, earned him widespread acclaim and several award nominations, including five Emmy Award nominations and three wins.

Success in film and television

Following the end of Taxi in 1983, Devito went on to appear in a number of successful films, including Romancing the Stone (1984), Ruthless People (1986), and Throw Momma from the Train (1987), which he also directed.

Devito has been married to actress Rhea Perlman since 1982. The couple has three children together, Lucy, Grace, and Jacob.
